Cane Furniture - Cane Conservatory FurnitureRattan Cane Furniture

You may have heard cane furniture referred to as rattan furniture, rattan cane furniture, bamboo furniture or wicker furniture, so why the difference in names?

We should really call cane furniture by its correct name, rattan furniture, but most people in this country think of cane furniture when they want conservatory furniture. This misnaming probably came about through gardeners calling the bamboo sticks that they use in the garden, "canes".

Rattan is the primary material used in the production of wicker, rattan or cane furniture and includes the entire pole, skin and all. Rattan is imported from South East Asia an resembles our grapevine and climbs along the floor of the jungle and through the trees. Rattan furniture or cane furniture, is incredibly strong, beautifully handmade and easy to maintain.

Cane is the second layer, the skin or bark of the rattan palm, after the outer thorns have been removed

Bamboo Furniture?

Bamboo is a material that resembles rattan, and is often mistaken for it. However, one of the biggest differences between bamboo and rattan is that bamboo has a hollow centre, and rattan a solid centre. Bamboo tends to split and break more easily than rattan, and so it is not used as often as rattan in cane furniture construction.

Wicker Furniture?

We probably think of woven cane furniture or the weaving process involved in making cane conservatory furniture, when we say wicker furniture. Rattan once again is the main material used in the production of wicker furniture.

Rattan Furniture Manufacture

Rattan furniture is manufactured by placing the rattan in a steam box , making it more pliable, in order to bend it into the shapes that are required to make the rattan furniture. When the rattan cane is hot, it is bent into the required shape, buy using pre-made furniture jigs, and when the rattan cools down, it retains it's shape. The shaped rattan canes are combined with straight poles that are contoured fit perfectly in order to add extra strength to the furniture.
